Después

Synopsis

In “Después,” Carmen (Ludwika Paleta, 40) grapples with the incomprehensible death of her only son, Jorge (Nicolás Haza, 20). Their deep friendship, formed after leaving Jorge’s father, hides secrets that slowly unravel. The ambiguity surrounding his death, potentially a suicide, paints a contradictory portrait, forcing Carmen to confront her blurred reflection. The film delves into Carmen’s introspection, challenging her understanding of motherhood and self. As she revisits her past – passions, identity, decisions, and aspirations before motherhood, and her failed attempt at a traditional family – she confronts the reality of her loss. Carmen’s journey reflects the broader path of Mexican society towards gender equality and sparks new dialogues about motherhood and its consequential decisions.
